Dhuie Dissection

Here it is finally... I have been talking this up for a while now and finally we managed to get the Coipasa Classic on after some ordinary weather the last few weeks. Thanks to Ian Keay from Fisheries for agreeing to be filmed whilst dissecting the winning dhufish during the comp. Ian shows where the correct ikijimi position is and extracts the otoliths that help age the fish. The fish in question was about to spawn that night so it was a touch of the guilts for Darryn who caught the fish from "the dropzone".
Hope you enjoy and learn a bit at the same time. Please remember that frames are badly needed for this important research.

Very poor sound quality
Sorry guys but I still haven't had time to take the camera in to get fixed so you will have to suffer the poor sound quality until I can remaster the clips.

ikijimi
the point to iki the fish is behind the eye and in line with the lateral line. You need to break through the brain case in order to hit the brain. I pulled up short just as I realised it was going to be dissected that night. I think you would have to be very unlucky to damage the otoliths though given their size and the fact that there are three pairs in there. So ikijimied fish can still be donated for the frame research I think. I'll double check with Ian just in case. But I think he did say on the night that it was fine to iki them first.
