Sacrifice my fishing time?? HELL NO
Becoz there were 15 of us, we divided ourselve in to 3 groups of 5. So when Im not fishing I film others or vice versa.

As for sacrificing fishing time, I tell ya, after you've landed a couple you are so knackered you want a go on the camera. But after watching someone else hookup, and that rod buckling and the reel screaming, you ignore the pain and back into the fray you go.. So much fun, i'll have to get you to drop that footage off next time your headed to bluewater honsu, just send me a msg so I can be home.

Your Spheros and Crystal Blue Powertip went pretty good ey. I reckon it could handle abit more drag. But you dont want to snap your rod just yet do you?? hehe

OH yeah forgot....

10" spanner rigged to the new Calstar blank GF410. Brute 80lb stick at only 4'10" (uncut) 6000GT helps get it up quicker as well.

 

Unfortunately Ive got no pics of the 410 at work. Ive got some vids of it. Will try to put them together and get Adam to load it up. Its an awesome rod to use, loads of lifting power without breaking your back. Only downside is when the fish goes under you have to lean over a fair bit to keep the line form the hull. Oh the 410 is not mine. One of Bluewaters "test to breaking point" rods. They ran PE12 and a heap of drag thru it no problems.

You can.....there are other fish to jig for in the same area. Fish like skippies, snapper, mulloway and possibly dhuie?!? Plenty of other fish to jig for out there. Doesnt have to be sambos. Should hang onto that jig rod U are selling.

Great video. I've been checking out this site quite a bit from over here in Japan. My friends and I do some jigging south of Tokyo a good bit but it's not easy to get amberjacks like that one in our area. Just out of curiosity, what depth were you fishing, and what jig weight did you use? The type of jigging folks are doing here is mostly near shore stuff so we never have to use anything beyond 200grams unless the current is really nasty. I keep hearing folks in Australia are using much heavier gear, and would like to know what's what when it comes to fishing there. Maybe next year I'll be looking to head that way for some tuna.

Hi galeintokyo,

No doubt Honsu (Technical tackle adviser for my shop hehehe) will post up soon but most of our jigging spots are in 100-120m of water and weights are 200-400 grams approx. We do however use up to 500 gram version for really big Sambo's!

ive even used 600g jigs before, but boy are they hard to work :P

400 grams at 100-120 meters of water. Wow..... Do you guys like using that jig weight to keep the jig from drifting in the current, or to get down to the bottom quickly? In your opinion, does the size of the jig in terms of length make a difference in terms of it's appeal to the fish? I use about 200 grams max when jigging between 70 and 100 meters. Thinking about getting an outfit to handle up to 300 grams, but haven't made up my mind as to whether I'll get as much use out of it as I ought to.

Are you guys using Japanese jigging rods, or is there a big domestic market for such tackle? Interested in knowing what's popular there.

HI Galeintokyo....thanks for your comments. Yes we do use fairly heavy weights. The problem is the current out there can be fairly quick at times and drifting with the wind also influences your jig weight. During "peak" sambo season......anything goes (even 12" spanners), as long as it gets down to the strike zone. When its windy and bit of current we do use 400gm+ but you dont have jig very far before getting hits...I've also used 600gm but very little jigging....basically I jig the bottom 20-30m fairly slow....most ppl use 300-400gm and use jerkly speed jig to get the sambos excited. 200gm can be used on calm days, as long as it gets to the strike zone before you drift too far away from your JIG.

As for rods.....it varies from cropped Ugly Stiks to custom Calstars (mostly 760L). Grifton had a few jig sticks in the market but has been discontinued due to inconsistent quality of the product. I myself use Zenaq Forkeeto and Calstar 765XL. Lately there have been a few Smith out there, either Fremantles, Nirai or AMJ 52EX.

I'll soon have another jigstick to add to my arsenal....it'll be a Taiwanese based custom stick with our own brand and will be matched to either a Van Staal 150 or a Avet SX 5.1

Building up a Jigging Master 500gram Special? =) That will be nice.

The Australian market is fairly limited in the types of jigging rods available, but those who are more dedicated can source rods from overseas.

In terms of length, Samsonfish are not fussy, so reduced surface area for water to carry it away (drift) will be better. Big and long Aluminium Jigs would thus not be very useful.

In teresting stuff guys. Those rod lengths are pretty cool. Up till recently folks have been using relatively short rods, usually no more than 5'6", but more and more brands are starting to market longer parabolic action rods, even for heavy loads. I'm having trouble creating links on this site, but I'll type in a web address to one of the makers that's leading the pack with longer rods for jigging.

Do you guys know CB-One? This brand is pretty famous now. Thinking about buying there 7'8 model for heavy jigging, but I want to wait and see what Daiwa plans on coming out with next year first.

Not sure about that. Saurus went out of business as I understand it. My friend told me they went bankrupt, but I don't know the details. Maybe the clout at CB-One bought Saurus infrastructure or something. I'll have to look into that.
